A regular at the Cheeseburger In Paradise Restaurant and
Bar (as well as several other venues around Atlanta) Jim
Asbell has also been a featured artist on the Atlanta Parrot Head Club's "Parrothead Cruise" for the last 3
years. Similarly, during the annual Meeting of the Minds Parrothead Convention in Key West, Jim can be found playing at the Bull and Whistle on the corner of Caroline and Duval Streets.
Born and raised in Atlanta, Jim started playing electric guitar at age 15.
His father was a jukebox repairman, and he made sure that young
Jim stayed well-stocked with 45's of the music of the day.
Years later, a friend of Jim's (who was a huge Buffett fan) introduced
him to the Trop-Rock genre. He was immediately hooked and began playing acoustic tunes again.
Starting out in small bars as a duo with keyboard
player Todd
Ague, (together known as “Jim and the Boys”), their main haunt was a bar in Lilburn,
GA called the "Lazy Dog Tavern". It was a rough and tumble biker bar
but they drew good crowds and played late into the evenings (This
also happens to be the bar mentioned in "Lazy Dogs and Megan's Bay" from
Jim's 2nd CD, “Tropiholics”).
The duo was later hired as a Buffett tribute act
by folks from the Atlanta and Lake Lanier Parrothead Clubs, and
they've been building steam ever since, playing such Parrothead events as the “Meeting of the Minds” Convention in Key West, the Corona VIP Pre-Concert Parties before the Buffett shows in Atlanta, and on the Atlanta Parrothead Club’s Cruise.
Jim has also (with the help of the Tropiholics band) recorded 2 CD’s of original music, and
has had the pleasure of having Greg “Fingers” Taylor sit in and record the harmonica tracks on the second CD,
“Tropiholics”.
