Trop Rock, Island Country & Caribbean Tropical Rock
The 1950's television boom
brought with it a vision of beautiful ocean landscapes and
soothing island music to the waiting homes of Americans everywhere.
Prior to that time, home radios blasted calypso music and Havana
nightclub swing bands into living rooms across the country.
In September 1959 children gleefully sat with their noses a mere 3
feet away from big-tube TV sets and watched Gardner McKay with
wide-eyed wonder in Adventures in Paradise.
Gilligan wrecked the SS Minnow, the Bradys visited Hawaii, American mothers swooned over Don Ho's
Polynesian sound, and Hawaii 5-0
held our attention.
In response to America's new love of the ocean and it's panoramic
splendor, the American music scene quickly adapted. The
Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, and others churned out beach songs
daily. The blending of tropical images
and music created something new, unique and lasting.
Today, award-winning artists such as Jack Johnson, Jimmy Buffett,
Kenny Chesney and others have finely tuned this genre, creating a
following and fan base of millions.
